Redesigning a Baton Rouge Website for Better Mobile UX & SEO

Team Sportsplex is a premier indoor sports facility in Baton Rouge, LA, offering year-round basketball and volleyball programs. The organization’s website was a critical touchpoint for parents looking to register their children for camps, leagues, and clinics. However, the old site suffered from an outdated design and poor usability, which was hindering its effectiveness. JY Sites undertook a full website redesign on WordPress to modernize Team Sportsplex’s online presence, focusing on mobile-friendly design, streamlined event registration, and improved SEO. This case study details the challenges we addressed and the solutions implemented to deliver a fast, user-centric website that drives higher engagement and camp sign-ups.

Challenges & Pain Points

The original Team Sportsplex website had several issues that needed resolution.

The look and feel were dated, which can erode user trust. In fact, 38.5% of people will leave a website due to an outdated appearance. The old design failed to convey the energy and professionalism of the Sportsplex brand.

The site was not fully responsive or mobile-optimized. This was critical because a large portion of users (busy parents) browse on smartphones. Non-mobile-friendly sites lose out on a huge share of traffic – websites not optimized for mobile miss up to 63% of Google searches. Moreover, 73.1% of visitors will abandon a site that doesn’t display well on their device, leading to high bounce rates and lost inquiries.

The information architecture was cluttered and unintuitive. Important details about camps and programs were hard to find, and calls-to-action for registration were not prominent. Given that 61.5% of users leave websites due to poor navigation, this was a major concern. The confusing layout created friction in the signup funnel, potentially discouraging users from completing registrations.

The old site had minimal metadata and poor semantic structure. It likely lacked proper meta descriptions, headings, and keyword focus, common issues seen on 56% of small business websites. This made it harder for search engines to understand and rank the content, resulting in low visibility on Google. The lack of mobile optimization further hurt SEO, since Google’s index prioritizes mobile-friendly sites. Overall, Team Sportsplex’s online reach and camp enrollment suffered due to these SEO gaps.

These pain points were clearly impacting user experience and the organization’s ability to grow its programs. We set out to solve each of these issues with a comprehensive redesign.

Solution Approach: Modern, Mobile-Friendly Redesign

We created a fresh, modern interface with a mobile-first approach. The new layout is fully responsive, ensuring smooth display and performance on phones, tablets, and desktops. This dramatically improves usability for the primary audience – parents on the go – by providing finger-friendly navigation, readable text, and fast-loading pages on mobile. A responsive website design also reduces bounce rates, since users are more likely to stay and engage when a site works well on their device. The visually appealing new design establishes credibility and aligns with Team Sportsplex’s branding, immediately giving a positive first impression to visitors.

We restructured the site’s information architecture to be intuitive. The main menu now clearly highlights key sections (Programs, Camps, Facility Info, Contact), and we simplified page layouts with logical headings and sections. Important calls-to-action (like “Register Now” buttons for upcoming camps) are prominently featured on relevant pages and the homepage. By incorporating obvious CTA buttons, we guide users directly into the signup funnel. The event pages (e.g. Basketball Camps) automatically show the next upcoming camp dates, details, and a bright “Register” link, so parents can quickly act. Overall, the user journey from browsing programs to registering a child is now seamless and frustration-free.

We built the new site on WordPress for a flexible, client-friendly content management experience. Custom WordPress plugins were developed to integrate with the Sportsplex’s external scheduling system via API. Rather than requiring manual updates, the site pulls live event data (camp schedules, prices, etc.) from the organization’s registration platform. This dynamic event feed ensures that the camp information is always up-to-date without extra effort from staff.  This integration eliminated duplicate data entry and potential inconsistencies. It also provides users a smooth experience – they can view all upcoming programs on the Team Sportsplex site and transition to the sign-up form confidently, knowing the info is current.

The redesign paid special attention to site performance. We optimized images and code, implemented caching, and chose a reliable hosting setup to ensure fast load times. Faster pages mean users don’t abandon the site out of impatience. The new site consistently scores higher on speed tests than the old site, contributing to better user experience and even SEO (since page speed is a ranking factor).

A major part of the project was improving SEO foundations. We conducted keyword research around terms like “Baton Rouge sports camps”, “youth basketball league Baton Rouge”, etc., and updated page titles and meta descriptions accordingly. Every page now has unique, descriptive meta tags to improve click-through from Google results. We also overhauled the site’s content structure with semantic HTML5 elements and proper heading hierarchy. This semantic structuring gives the content vital context and helps search engines better understand its relevancy to user queries. We also added alt text to images and ensured the site is accessible, aligning with best practices (over 96% of homepages have accessibility issues out-of-the-box, something we worked to avoid). With these on-page SEO improvements and the mobile-friendly design, the site is now primed to rank higher for relevant searches and attract more organic traffic.

Results & Benefits

In summary, the project succeeded in transforming Team Sportsplex’s web presence into a modern, effective marketing and registration tool. The organization is now better positioned to attract and serve its primary audience online. The case exemplifies how a thoughtful redesign can solve longstanding pain points and deliver measurable business value.
